Mount Kilimanjaro can be climbed throughout the year, but the best conditions are during the dry seasons.
The most recommended months are:
January to March – Clear skies, fewer climbers, and cooler temperatures
June to October – Stable weather, excellent visibility, and peak trekking season
The rainy seasons (April–May and November) offer greener landscapes and fewer crowds, but trails may be wetter and more challenging.
Weather on Mount Kilimanjaro varies significantly with altitude. Climbers pass through several climate zones, from warm tropical forests at the base to freezing alpine conditions near the summit.
Daytime temperatures are generally mild at lower elevations, while nighttime temperatures near the summit can drop well below freezing. Proper layering and preparation are essential, and our guides ensure you are well briefed and equipped for all weather conditions.

Transfer to your lodge for a relaxed evening and preparation briefing
After an early morning pickup from your hotel, you’ll drive to the Lemosho Gate on the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro. Following park registration and meeting your Safari Touch Tanzania mountain crew, the adventure begins. The trek gently ascends through lush rainforest, where towering trees, birds, and occasional wildlife create a peaceful start to the climb. You’ll arrive at Big Tree Camp in the afternoon, where you can relax and enjoy your first night on the mountain.
Today’s trek takes you out of the forest and onto the Shira Plateau, where the landscape opens into wide moorlands with dramatic mountain views. The gradual ascent allows for excellent acclimatization as you cross volcanic terrain and enjoy your first clear views of Kibo Peak. You’ll arrive at Shira 1 Camp in the afternoon and relax while taking in the vast scenery.
Cross the expansive Shira Plateau today, trekking through grassy moorland and scattered volcanic rock formations. As altitude increases, you’ll notice the changing environment and breathtaking panoramic views. The steady pace across this high-altitude plateau supports acclimatization while offering rare views of Kilimanjaro’s northern ice fields.
The route climbs gradually into the alpine desert zone, offering breathtaking views beneath the glaciers of the Western Breach. You’ll reach Lava Tower (4,640m), the highest point of the day, where lunch is served. Afterward, descend steeply into the Great Barranco Valley. Sheltered by towering cliffs, Barranco Camp offers dramatic scenery and excellent conditions for acclimatization following the “walk high, sleep low” principle.
The day begins with a descent into the Barranco Gorge, followed by a challenging climb up the famous Barranco Wall. Though not technical, this section is steep and rewarding, offering incredible views of the surrounding glaciers. Traversing beneath the Heim and Kersten Glaciers, the trail continues to Karanga Camp. In the afternoon, an optional acclimatization walk may be offered to help prepare your body for summit day.
After breakfast, we continue our ascent toward Barafu Camp. The terrain becomes more rugged and barren as vegetation disappears, signaling entry into the alpine desert zone.
Upon arrival at Barafu Camp, you’ll spend the afternoon resting, hydrating, and preparing for summit night. An early dinner is served before you retire for a short sleep ahead of the midnight summit attempt.
Your summit attempt begins around midnight, climbing steadily through scree slopes toward Stella Point (5,739m) as the sun rises over Africa. From there, you continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point on the continent, surrounded by glaciers and breathtaking views. After celebrating your achievement, you descend back to Barafu Camp for breakfast before continuing down to Millennium Camp for a well-earned rest.
A gentle descent takes you through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you complete park procedures and receive your official Kilimanjaro climbing certificate. You are then transferred back to your hotel in Moshi, where a hot shower and celebration await after your successful Kilimanjaro climb with Safari Touch Tanzania.
