The Machame Route, also known as the “Whiskey Route,” is one of the most scenic and popular routes on Kilimanjaro. It offers diverse landscapes, from lush rainforest to dramatic alpine desert and glacial views.
This route follows a climb high, sleep low acclimatization profile, improving summit success rates. It is ideal for adventurous climbers seeking stunning scenery and a rewarding challenge.
Mount Kilimanjaro can be climbed throughout the year, but the best conditions are during the dry seasons.
The most recommended months are:
January to March – Clear skies, fewer climbers, and cooler temperatures
June to October – Stable weather, excellent visibility, and peak trekking season
The rainy seasons (April–May and November) offer greener landscapes and fewer crowds, but trails may be wetter and more challenging.
Weather on Mount Kilimanjaro varies significantly with altitude. Climbers pass through several climate zones, from warm tropical forests at the base to freezing alpine conditions near the summit.
Daytime temperatures are generally mild at lower elevations, while nighttime temperatures near the summit can drop well below freezing. Proper layering and preparation are essential, and our guides ensure you are well briefed and equipped for all weather conditions.

Transfer to your lodge for a relaxed evening and preparation briefing
After breakfast at your hotel, we drive for about one hour to Machame Gate, where park formalities are completed and you meet your Safari Touch Tanzania mountain crew. The trek begins through dense and beautiful rainforest, with towering trees, moss-covered paths, and rich wildlife surroundings. The trail climbs steadily and can be wet and muddy, adding to the authentic mountain adventure.
Leaving the rainforest behind, the trail gradually ascends into heath and moorland vegetation. The climb becomes steeper as we approach the Shira Plateau, rewarding you with expansive views of Mount Kilimanjaro and, on clear days, Mount Meru rising above Arusha in the distance. This is a shorter trekking day, allowing your body time to adjust to the increasing altitude.
Today’s trek takes you across high moorland and alpine terrain as you traverse the southwestern slopes of Kilimanjaro. You will pass beneath the dramatic Lava Tower, reaching elevations of up to 4,600m before descending to Barranco Camp. This important acclimatization day follows the principle of walk high, sleep low, helping your body adjust while enjoying some of the most scenic landscapes on the mountain.
After breakfast, the day begins with a climb up the famous Barranco Wall, offering exciting scrambling and stunning views. The route then continues across rocky ridges and alpine desert terrain toward Barafu Camp, your base for the summit attempt. Upon arrival, you rest, hydrate, and prepare for the night ascent. An early dinner is served before you sleep in anticipation of summit night.
Your summit attempt begins around midnight, climbing steadily through scree slopes toward Stella Point (5,739m) as the sun rises over Africa. From there, you continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point on the continent, surrounded by glaciers and breathtaking views. After celebrating your achievement, you descend back to Barafu Camp for breakfast before continuing down to Millennium Camp for a well-earned rest.
A gentle descent takes you through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you complete park procedures and receive your official Kilimanjaro climbing certificate. You are then transferred back to your hotel in Moshi, where a hot shower and celebration await after your successful Kilimanjaro climb with Safari Touch Tanzania.
Transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for your flight home, taking
